In fact, Assams Muga Silk is as famous as its picturesque tea plantations. This gorgeous fabric, known for its durability and natural yellowish-tint, was once reserved for the royalty. Therefore still now, muga silk is as expensive as purchasing gold. Over the years, this silk has gained more and more popularity. Today, Muga Silk is a desired traditional wedding wear.

Origin and History

Assams sericulture industry is one of the oldest industry, which doesnt really have a time frame. This is known to exist since the very beginning. In fact the first records of Muga or Assam Silk came to light during the Ahom dynasty (1228-1826).

The Muga Culture flourished during this period and became the essential part of the social and economic lives of the local people. Muga Silk was believed to be worn by the Ahom kings, especially. The fabric was preserved in the kingdom. It was also presented to the visitors of their court as one of the finest local offerings.

Muga silk has been given the Geographical Indication (GI) status since 2007 and the logo for authentic production has been registered with Assam Science Technology and Environment Council. The Central Silk Board of India has the authority to inspect Muga silk products, certify their authenticity and allow traders to use the GI logo.

Weaving process

The Garo Community of Assam produced the Muga or Assam Silk, mainly obtained from sem-domesticated multi-voltine silkworm, Antheraea Assamensis. These silkworms feed on the leaves of Som and Soalu plants and produce glossy textured and durable silk.

A silk farmer producing almost about 400 grams of Muga or Assam Silk requires access to at least an acre of land.

In fact, 1000 cocoons can produce about 125 grams of silk. However, a single Assam Silk saree requires at least 1000 grams of silk. From rearing the silkworm to getting the finished products, the time taken to weave a Muga or Assam Silk saree is nearly two months. The actual weaving process takes about one week to 10 days to complete.

Colours

The golden yellow colour is the base of this silk and has become the selling of point of this fabric. Embroidery and zari work also add colors to the fabric, thereby making the product more attractive. Therefore whatever be the occasion, a bright-colored Muga or Assam Silk Saree is a classic must-have!

Motifs

Traditional motifs like Miri Gos Butta (a pattern of miniature tree motifs) and kabutar (pigeons) are used on the typical Assami topi or Jappi as well as the Assamese Silk Saree online. Over the years, the motifs on the saree or the topi have always remained geometrical in shape. However, the pure jari work found on the fabric, gives it a very royal and classy feel.

Varieties

Mekhela chadors, the five-yard saree are the biggest variety of this fabric, which is a twi-piece Assamese Silk saree is the traditional outfit of Assamese women, worn on special occasions like pujas, weddings and festivals. Even shawls and other dress material are made out of Muga Silk.

Muga silk remains a classic item that every woman desires to own, however its traditional outlook, and non-versatility (it hasnt really evolved much beyond the traditional Mekhela chadors), makes the demand a little niche.

Nevertheless, the fabric does have a global connect especially in Japan where designers are using it to make kimonos and other traditional Japanese dresses.

How to identify a Muga silk saree?

The only method to identify a Muga silk from other natural silk is by using a certain kind of microscope. However, the strict quality check at the time of production and the GI status ensures that you only hold an original product in your hand. An alarm bell could be the cost if its less than Rs.10,000 or if the shopkeeper is willing to sell it at a discount, you might be buying a fake product.

Care guide

Dry cleaning is the most preferred method of maintaining a Muga silk saree. However, if you do have to wash the saree at home, avoid using soap during the first three washes. A rinse in cold water is more than enough. It is advisable to store the saree separately in a plastic or saree bag.
